Exhibit Honors Delaware Artist

The artwork of Aaron C. Shields will be featured during a special exhibition coinciding with the 2011 Delaware Arts Festival.

Delaware’s new City Art Center (CAC), 22 E. Winter St., will host the exhibit, which will feature the work of Shields, who died unexpectedly in May 2010 at the age of 35.

“The CAC exhibition committee has agreed that we would like to highlight someone that has given so much to the arts in Delaware,” said Jessi Walker of the CAC, where the show will be held May 2-31.

“This exhibition will be a wonderful tribute to Aaron and his love of Delaware,” said his sister, Wendy Curtin. “I’m happy it’s being held in conjunction with the Arts Festival because being part of that event was very important to him.”

For many years, Shields was committee chairperson for the Delaware Arts Festival Student Show. After his death, the event was renamed in his honor and Curtin took over as chairperson.

Shields was well-known in Delaware for his performances as Jester the Clown, and Curtin, who will select artwork for the CAC exhibition, said the show will include several of her brother’s clown paintings.

“Aaron also did a number of Delaware-specific paintings, like Gray Chapel, Blue Limestone Park and scenes from the county fair,” she said. “The show will definitely include those.”
